Description
It is a fantasy in three parts that takes as a starting point the ballad singer’s song “The Scariolante”. “First part” : In the deep and static of the night, the clock bells ring midnight. In the distance a trumpet plays; it is the sign for the assembly. The sleepy scariolante, dresses quickly and runs to the call of the trumpet. It is the start of a new, hard days work. The melody of the scariolante song is presented entirely. “Second part” : During a short break, after a poor breakfast, the scariolante dozes off on the hard ground, in those moments of deep sleep, hears in the dream the sound of a trumpet, and then, two, three, and many more. It is a noisy chaos. He does not know how to resist the nightmare… he tosses and turns… the ground is hard. He changes position… and finally settles down. A sweet and romantic melody seems to caress him, then again hears a trumpet… the sound of bells… everything seems to be so far away and unreal. “Third part” : The short dream is finished. The return of the resounding song of the scariolante, by all the trumpets representing the hard reality. The rhythm of the accompaniments becomes haunting and breathtaking. When it seems as if all has come to an end, the return of the brass seems to say: “come on, come on…turn, revolt, return to revolt…” . A persistent repetition of a rhythmic way, basses and double basses do not give rest. And then, finally, the last sonorous return stops: the hard day is ending. There is yet the return to the village which is still a long way away where the families are waiting. It is always a joyous return. The day is finished. But tomorrow? Tomorrow it all starts again: “At midnight you can hear a trumpet play…”.
