The biography of Maestro Luciano Marani, known as Tiberio, is the story of a life dedicated to music and composition. Born Jan. 5, 1936, in Cesena, a music lover from an early age, he first approached the study of the accordion and then enrolled at the "G. Rossini" Conservatory of Pesaro in the early 1950s, graduating in piano on July 16, 1960.
He immediately embarked on a career as a pianist in the late 1950s with a number of pop music ensembles in Italy and abroad, including: the "LITTLE BAND" in 1958, the "CAMIS," from 1959 to 1961, the "CLAUDIO DELL'ADRIA QUARTET" in 1960 and the "5 KINGS" from 1960 to 1964.
The "LITTLE BAND" orchestra, founded by guitarist Raoul Casadei, consisted of seven elements: Tiberio Marani (piano), Sauro Rocchi (drums) and his brother Ilario Rocchi (clarinet), Marino Gori (trumpet), Alberto Casadei (lead vocals) and a saxophonist. The orchestra entertained audiences on summer weekends in 1958 to the rhythm of rock and swing.
The "CAMIS" orchestra, founded by drummer Franco Righi from Milano Marittima, had immediately involved singer Piero Focaccia. For the making of the official photos of the new line-up, in 1959 Franco and Piero went to Cesena, and on that occasion they met the other two members of the orchestra: Tiberio Marani who played the piano and Giorgio Fabbri known as "Giorgino" who played and still plays the guitar.
In 1960 Tiberio Marani was also part of the "CLAUDIO QUARTET OF ADRIA," together with Cesena guitarist Luigi "Gigi" Nori.
After his experience with "CAMIS," Giorgio Fabbri became one of singer Fred Bongusto's orchestral musicians, while Franco Righi remained in Romagna running two record stores between Cesena and Milano Marittima.
Piero Focaccia, on the advice of Tiberio Marani, moved to the Capital and began performing with the "5 KINGS" band in a number of night clubs, particularly at the Rupe Tarpea in Via Veneto.
The band members, in addition to Piero Focaccia: Tiberio Marani on piano, Luigi "Gigi" Nori on guitar, Sauro Rocchi on drums, and his brother Ilario Rocchi on clarinet and saxophone.
In 1961 the group was hired by the local Moulin Rouge in Turin; a venue where they performed again in 1963 together with Gino Paoli. Between 1962 and 1964 the "5 KINGS" also played in Tivoli and Bologna.
His passion and love for the accordion led Tiberio Marani to make a name for himself in the musical scene of his homeland, coming into contact with the great Maestro CARLO BAIARDI, one of the historic saxophonists of dance music in Romagna, who had been part of Maestro Secondo Casadei's orchestra, replacing Primo Lucchi, until 1962, when he decided to form his own orchestra.
The musicians who make up the first lineup are: Giovanni Fantini (guitar and vocals), Delvolto Argelli (clarinet), Tiberio Marani (piano and accordion), Paolo Bersani (trumpet), Pino Zampa (drums and vocals), Sante "Jack" Montanari (flute and bass). The first singers were Maria, Marylin, Lidia Strada and Marisa Paganelli, who remained until 1967.
Combo Record, a well-known Italian record company based in Milan, released the first 4 LPs titled "CARLO BAIARDI AND HIS COMPLEX" (vol. 1 and 2) and "SOUVENIR OF ROMAGNA" (vol. 3 and 4) between 1965 and 1967.
The 33 rpm records, but also the numerous 45 rpm records, represent the calling card of the artist and his musical production. A house in the hills of Cesena called "Cesenella" was chosen as the location for the cover.
At different times in 1968 they were part of the Carlo Baiardi Orchestra, Sauro Rocchi (drums), Enrico Muccioli (sax) and Anna Minuzzi (singer).
Tiberio Marani played with the orchestra "CARLO BAIARDI AND HIS COMPLEX" until 1968, and then landed the following year in a new musical ensemble called the " KENT" consisting of orchestra leader Romano Borsari on guitar, Tiberio Marani on piano, Giovanni Prati on sax and violin, Sauro Rocchi on drums and Gastone Guerrini lead vocals.
Salvatore Carloni on bass was added later.
Parallel to his activities as a pianist and accordionist, Tiberio Marani began to compose his first Romagna folk songs including waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, immediately finding success in 1970 with the historical orchestra "FOLKLORE DI ROMAGNA" of Forlì, founded by drummer Nevis Bazzocchi the previous year.
The lineup is made up of six musicians who had left Secondo Casadei's orchestra, creating quite a stir in the dance scene: Arte Tamburini (singing), Nevis Bazzocchi (drums), Tonino Zoli known as "Tugnaz" (clarinet), Giacomo Zozzi (accordion and trumpet), Gilberto Sapucci and Luciano Brandi (vocals). They are joined by others to complete the orchestra: Germano Montefiori (sax), Maurizio Dall'Ara (guitar), Alberto Semprini (bass) and Franco Barberini (piano).
Miura Records, another important Italian record company based in Milan, established in 1968, published the first 3 LPs, and their reissues between 1969 and 1972, entitled "Folklore di Romagna Volume Primo," "Folklore di Romagna Volume Secondo," and "Folklore di Romagna Volume Terzo." Tiberio Marani participated in the recordings of the albums in November 1970.
"MERAVIGLIOSO" is the spearhead that has made millions of people dance and decreed a growing international success along with other timeless masterpieces, including "BARONETTO," "L'UBRIACONA," "LA CONTESSA," "SPIRITOSA," "BASTIA," "SIAMO IN ONDA," "MAMMONA," "RICORDIAMO GUIDO ROSSI," "ADONE," "LA PACIARONA," and "MIURA."
Over the 30 years of the "FOLKLORE DI ROMAGNA" Orchestra's activity, Maestro Tiberio Marani writes so many compositions. So many have danced to the notes of these hits published for Peer Southern Productions, Ricordi, D.E.M. Edizioni Musicali:
"THE HORSES ARE TIRED," "SUPERSONIC," "ANDREA," "ON A ROLL," "TRIUMPH," "PAGODA," "ROMAGNA MIO AMOR," "OSSOBUCO," "TRAMPALINI," "I VAGABONDI," "MONTE BIANCO," "SBIRULINA," "PARABOLICA," "CAMPIONISSIMO." In the late 1970s a musical ensemble called "GLI AMICI" was born in Cesena. The musicians who
make up the 1978 lineup are: Giovanni Prati (violin sax and flute), Umberto Zani (clarinet and
flute), Marco Prati (keyboards), Giorgio "Giorgino" Fabbri (guitar), Lele Baldacci (drums), Bruno Signorini
(bass). Vocals are by Nazario Mazzoni and Carla "La Carlina" Ceccarelli.
As the years passed, Tiberio Marani's name became increasingly popular among orchestras in Emilia-Romagna and outside the region, especially in Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Veneto, and Sicily.
This resulted in a high increase in requests for the sheet music of his songs to the point that, on May 23, 1981, he decided to establish the publishing house "MARANI EDIZIONI MUSICALI."
Since that time he has carried on his primary activity as an editor, publishing light and folk music pieces for orchestra, pieces for solo accordion, alto sax, clarinet and especially music for band.
Editorial proposals designed and programmed for band ensembles include brilliant and symphonic marches, transcriptions of classical pieces, arrangements of pieces in rhythmic versions, original concert pieces of a modern character, operatic fantasies, marchable potpourri, marchable parodies, national and patriotic anthems, dance entertainment, religious and funeral music, fantasies, ensemble music for chamber groups, music for choir, band librettos, didactics and recordings.
At the end of the 1980s, a new musical formation called "QUINTETTO ROMAGNOLO" was born. It consists of Maestros: Tiberio Marani on accordion, Giovanni Fantini on guitar, Bruno Spignoli aka "The Rock" on bass, Delvolto Argelli on clarinet and Silvano Silvagni on alto sax.
Photographic sessions take place in Cotignola (RA), at the home of Maestro Delvolto Argelli in October 1988.
Between 1989 and 1999, Maestro Tiberio Marani began a new musical experience by collaborating with the "SILVANO SILVAGNI E VITTORIO PALLI" Orchestra of Faenza (RA), writing for the folkloric "liscio" tradition about fifty songs that are enclosed in the first 10 CD volumes of their discography.
The orchestra made its debut on November 4, 1989, and the repertoire faithful to the typical Romagnolo style would enjoy great popularity even when Vittorio Palli left the post in 1999 and was replaced by Maestro Marani himself, who would return to play his accordion on the stages of major dance halls.
On Nov. 9, 2000, in an evening full of emotions, the Orchestra of Forlì clarinetist "MIRCO GRAMELLINI" made its debut at the Piteco Club in Godo di Russi (RA), with three other elements who had left the Silvagni and Palli Orchestra: Giacomo Marigotti (drums), Elisa Proietti (singer), Maurizio Stacchini (singer). Rounding out the valuable and experienced lineup are: Tiberio Marani (accordion), Elio Baldarelli (sax), Enzo D'Asmara (violin) and Leonardo Pini (bass).
Maestro Tiberio Marani plays with the "MIRCO GRAMELLINI" Orchestra in various local clubs and festivals in the area, and then also moves to other Italian regions until December 2004.
In its many years of activity, the MIRCO GRAMELLINI Orchestra has recorded as many as eight record works. About sixty pieces between 2000 and 2017 are the result of collaboration with Maestro Tiberio Marani.
From an idea of Ezio Rizzoli, patron of the Piteco Club in Godo di Russi and Luciano Monti, the glorious new musical lineup of the "FOLKLORE DI ROMAGNA" Orchestra will restart on November 7, 2016, with some of the original musicians and the addition of new ones. Among them:
Silvano Silvani (alto saxophone), Andrea Chiarabini (drums), Giorgio Fabbri (bass guitar), Piero Brasini (guitar), Tiberio Marani (accordion), Giuseppe Gili (alto saxophone), Gabriele Fussi (clarinet), Mirco Gramellini (clarinet), Dedo Baldassarri (keyboards), Enzo D'Asmara (violin), Antonella Nuti (viola and vocalist), Tony Pierotti (vocalist).
The repertoire included hits by the great masters of Romagna folklore: Secondo Casadei, Tiberio Marani, Ferrer Rossi, Vittorio Borghesi, Carlo Baiardi, Delvolto Argelli, Ivano Nicolucci and Franco Bergamini.
The evenings scheduled at Piteco Club on the first Monday of each month ended with the last one on May 15, 2017.
Maestro Tiberio Marani will be remembered for his beautiful music and great collaborations with the many orchestras-Carlo Baiardi, Folklore di Romagna, Delvolto Argelli, I Passatori, Vittorio Borghesi, Gigi Stok, Quintetto Romagnolo, Silvano Silvagni and Vittorio Palli, Raoul Casadei, Bruno "La Roccia" Spignoli, La Nuova Romagna Folk, Gabriele Fussi and Milva, Gianfranco Azzalli, Edmondo Comandini and Mirco Gramellini.
Beginning in 1995, Lionello Marani joined his father in management and promotion, later taking the reins of the publishing house following the Maestro's sudden death in Cesena on November 7
2017.
His career and contributions to Romagnola and Italian folk music have been extraordinary; Maestro Tiberio Marani will always remain a prominent figure in the world of pop and folk music.
